Nashville born, Pittsburgh raised Anton DeFade has established himself as one of the most in demand bassists in the Pittsburgh area and beyond. He is a full time member of the soul/rock band, The Commonheart, and when he's not touring the country with them he splits his time writing, arranging, and freelancing in his hometown of Pittsburgh.
The Anton DeFade Quintet tackles classic soul, jazz and reimagined standards alongside vintage sounding originals - think Cannonball Adderley, Ray Brown, Horace Silver, & Art Blakey. This is not your stereotypical jazz band - the group is energetic and won't play anything unless it feels good. The band comes to City Winery Jazz Brunch on Saturday, June 8 with a special musical salute to Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley with the addition of Mariko Reid.
Upon graduating high school, Anton performed with the Center of Life (COL) jazz band in addition to teaching at the program. Center of Life is a community organization that uses music, arts, and education to empower families within the community of Hazelwood and help revitalize the community. In 2011, the Center of Life Jazz Band took 2nd place in the Monterey Next Generation Festival and went on to take 1st place the following year. After this victory, Anton formed the band Elevations alongside fellow COL members George Heid III, Brett Williams, Benny Benack III, and Michael Stephenson. Elevations recorded two studio albums and featured musicians such as Sean Jones, Warren Wolf, and Carolyn Perteete.
In addition to COL & Elevations, Anton has been consistently building his reputation as a freelance musician by performing/recording with artists like vibraphonist Warren Wolf, trumpeter Sean Jones, singer/songwriter Bill Deasy, saxophonist Dahi Divine, drummer Justin Faulkner, funk group Steeltown Horns with drummer Poogie Bell, and Roger Humphries' band RH Factor.
“New Frontiers” an album that features four generations of DeFades was released on the MCG Jazz label at the end of 2021. The album features mostly original works from various family members including Anton.
Currently, Anton is focusing more attention on writing and recording music with his own group the Anton DeFade Quintet alongside many other projects as a sideman.
